feat(audit): audit runs and attestations are journaled (P8)
A claim that someone checked the books is evidence the CPA handoff rests on, so it is a journal fact and replays: audit.run (a programme run through a day at the books' figure head, with the hashes that make it reproducible and the two filed workpapers), receipt.attested, entry.reviewed and period.attested. Behind the journal feature audits, schema 20; no figure moves. The figure head is the last line that bears on a figure: filing a workpaper, a run or an attestation never makes an audit stale, an entry, document, close, settings or role change does, so a period is attested only on an audit that still describes the books. A receipt reading that differs from the entry is recorded as disagreeing and never counts; whether a claim counts is derived against the bar when asked, never stored. The store also reads what a ledger cannot: the chain, the database against a replay, stored and extracted files, the access log, duplicate files, and the backups' standing handed in by the server. Fixture old-books/p8_before was written by the version before this one and opens to its figures. period.attested was the tests' placeholder for an unknown event type; they use ledger.not_yet_written now. feat(store): a record's source can be corrected without touching its words (P5)
Accounting reason: a convention, a decision or an open item carries who
decided it, when and on what authority. When that is recorded wrongly the
honest fix is to say so on the record, not to restate the policy: a policy
revision bumps the convention's revision and reads as a change of the rule,
and a new decision supersedes the old one. A source correction changes only
the authority and says why, so the audit trail shows the words were never
altered.
New event types convention.source_revised, decision.source_revised and
open_item.source_revised {id, source, reason} under the journal feature
source_revisions: an older version would refuse the types, or show the old
source as the record's authority, so it stops at the declaration instead
(rules.md B-27) and books that have not had the owner's upgrade refuse the
write with format_upgrade_pending, journaling nothing. Replay sets the
source and nothing else (the text, the revision and the journal line stay);
the projection updates the rows' existing source columns, so no schema
changed. A correction must be one: other words, the same source, no reason
or an unknown record is refused.
books.set_convention takes reason (the text exactly as it stands),
books.record_decision and books.raise_item take revises with reason. Without
reason the old refusal stands and now says how to correct only the source.

feat(store): draft states and discards are journaled, posted_seq is kept (P4)
Accounting reason: a draft that waits on its receipt, and one thrown
away, are facts about the books' working papers that must survive a
restart and replay identically, or a discarded draft would come back and
hold its period open. entry.draft_state_set and entry.draft_discarded are
drafts_v2's (an older version stops at the declaration instead of
misreading them); no figure moves. Schema 19 (taken at merge as the next
after the current last): entries.posted_seq, and a draft_states table
(drafts are not rows of entries, so the plan's entries.draft_state column
has nowhere to live). posted_seq is the journal line that posted each
entry (entry.posted, entry.reversed, the line that closed a period or
posted a schedule month), identical live and on replay.

merge: P6, the evidence pipeline (branch P6, checkpoint ce366408)
The last of the paused branches, from its "not for merge" checkpoint:
extraction in ledger-import (text, pages, page images; capped, caught),
journaled as attachment.text_extracted; dedup by hash with
books.find_attachment and books.consolidate_duplicates; annotations and
books.set_entry_settles; the company record categories; the two fuzz
targets; feature attachment_text. Nineteen files conflicted with the
four P4b merges, resolved as plan 8.0.2 says: P6 retakes schema 18 (it
had taken 16, which S4.3 holds; S5 holds 17); the tool table is 129 and
the destructive count 31; both sides' appends kept with their seams
restored; one B-27 paragraph naming every feature; in the old-books
fixture P6's hand-written reimbursement is entry 7 (its ids collided
with S4.3's invoice); the replay fuzzer's list gains S7's
invoice.written_off; S4.3's issued-PDF test expects the extraction
record P6 journals right after a filing.
One integration defect between S7 and P6, found by the arap property
test and fixed here: under P6's dedup, a write-off whose evidence bytes
were filed already (the same collection letter for a second write-off of
the same invoice) was refused only after its entry had been journaled,
at the final link to the invoice ("already linked"). The write-off now
resolves the dedup before anything is journaled and keeps a link the
record already has to the invoice instead of refusing it; an explicit
existing_attachment_id already on an entry is still refused (S7's
one-receipt-once rule). P6's gate never ran before the pause; it runs on
main after this merge, and its ledger-store -> ledger-import dependency
is the open review point (plan 8.0.1).

test(fuzz): the replay fuzzer writes invoice.written_off
S7 added the event type (R-B step 6: the fuzzer's list must name every type the store replays, the_replay_fuzzer_writes_every_event_type) and the merge lost the line; the S7 gate on main caught it. feat(arap): record an invoice's sends as invoice.sent (P4b S5)
The books never send invoices (A-4), but they must remember that one
went out: who sent it, how, to whom, when, whether it was the original
or a reminder, and the channel's own reference. That record is a fact
of the document's life, not a figure: a send moves no money, so it is
one journal line (`invoice.sent`) and no entry, and every derived
figure (outstanding, aging, DocState) is exactly as it was.
`Ledger::mark_sent` refuses a send on a void invoice (it should never
have reached the customer), a send dated before the invoice, no
recipients, and any recipient, reference or note that would put a full
TIN or control characters into the journal. Open, partial, paid and
written-off invoices can be sent (a copy for the customer's records, a
reminder).
The event is `documents_v2`'s (D-52): an older version refuses the
type rather than dropping the record. Replay restores it and the
projection keeps it in schema 16's `invoice_sends` table, so live,
replay and the viewer agree. The new old-books fixture `p4_s5_before`

feat: invoices and bills take a project, line by line (B-37 item 8)
A client project's invoiced revenue and a contractor's billed cost could never count toward the project: books.create_invoice and books.create_bill posted at once with untagged lines, and only a draft's line takes a class. Job costing (B-37 item 3) collects a job's billings and the supplier invoices for its direct costs on its cost sheet, so each document line now takes an optional project. The owner decided it on 2026-10-22 (plan D-43, rules.md B-37 item 8): each line takes one project or none; a document spanning N projects is N lines, each with its own amount; no percentage split, so every figure is exact; a cost truly shared among projects names none on the document and reaches projects only as entries of their own under the company's monthly allocation convention, when books.conventions has one (otherwise it stays untagged and the agent asks the human). The reasoning, stated in B-37: job costing charges a job the costs traceable to it, whole, and reaches shared costs only by allocation on a stated basis. ASC 340-40-25-7 counts as directly related both the costs traceable to a contract (25-7(a), (b), (d), (e)) and allocations of costs that relate directly to it (25-7(c)); 25-8 expenses general and administrative cost. The books carry the first whole on the document's line and the second as the allocation convention's own entries; neither is a percentage on the document (sources/fasb-asc.md, 25-7 and 25-8 added). The handbook's projects rule and the line's class parameter say the same, and no handbook sentence lets a shared cost be split across a document's lines. The accounting: the document's entry posts one revenue (an invoice's) or expense (a bill's) line per project its lines name, in the order each is first named, each the sum of that project's lines, and the untagged lines' sum as one more line (arap::document_parts, conservation checked by a proptest). A document naming no project therefore posts exactly the one line every document posted before. The receivable or payable line is never tagged: it is a balance-sheet line, which item 3 counts nothing; the payments (receive_payment, pay_bill) move cash against it and take no project either. Nothing but the projects moves: the P&L, the 1099 worksheet (payments made, B-19) and party totals (what moved the money, B-35) read the same with or without the tags (twin-books test); the projects with the untagged lines still partition the P&L. - ledger-core: DocumentLine.class_id (serde-omitted when none, so old documents serialize as before); create_invoice / create_bill split the revenue or expense side by project and tag it; an unknown project is refused whole (atomically). - ledger-store: a document line's project is journaled as class_id on invoice.created / bill.created, and the entry's line as entry.line_class_set right after its entry.line_added (the entry.posted lines carry class_id, as a hand-built entry's do). Behind a NEW journal feature, document_line_projects (KNOWN_FEATURES, declared by new books, asked for before the first journaled line, not even the control accounts written on refusal); not `projects`, which the live books already declared: the owner consents again at the next upgrade. A malformed class_id is corrupt; null or absent is none. Untagged documents journal byte for byte as before; old journals replay unchanged. - ledger-mcp: each line takes class (id or name, resolved like add_line's, every one before anything is written); the result gains notes for a finished or abandoned project, and on an invoice for an on-spec project (is there now an agreement? on spec a hoped-for payment is no receivable, B-37 item 4), tagged anyway; books lacking the feature refuse with format_upgrade_pending. books.get_entry shows a line's class_id and project. The handbook's "an invoice or bill takes no project yet" caveat now depends on the books: gone where the feature is declared, an "until their format upgrade" note where it isn't. - ledger-gui: an invoice's or bill's page (its entry's) lists the document's lines, each project a link that opens it; the demo's client invoices are tagged to "Client work", whose snapshot is now its revenue less its contractors. Looking at the page in a narrow window found a tagged line's tag pushing the amounts past the pane (any tagged entry): the name is now cut to leave the tag room, the tag itself at most half the cell. - bookspec: an `invoice` event, and `lines` with `project` on a bill or an invoice; example projects-invoice-and-bill-lines-count-by-project, worked by hand, both projects client work (Zeta 3,500.00 - 1,200.00 = 2,300.00; Harbor 200.00; untagged -1,750.00; together the P&L's 750.00; Dana's 1099 payments 1,250.00). - fuzz: fuzz_store_replay can declare journal features. - Tests: core, store, MCP, viewer, the P2-served cutover fixture and a viewer/server parity test (its month lists the same length, not empty); a tagged document's reversal nets its projects to zero, live and replayed; books.get_entry's class_id; the handbook served as a resource both ways; each fix broken to confirm its test fails (docs/testing.md). Docs: rules.md B-27 and B-37 items 3 and 8, sources/fasb-asc.md, plan/served.md D-43, mcp-interface.md, testing.md, parity.md, plan/STATUS.md. No proof changed (no kernel arithmetic: document_parts sums with the existing document_total). Projects: classes as entities, and the sidebar fits short windows
check / check (push) Canceled after 0s
A project is a class with facts (description, status, kind, party, dates, links, notes) in one project.set event behind the format feature projects. Four tools (books.add_project, update_project, projects, project); documents and decisions link to projects; B-37: on-spec costs are expensed as incurred, repayment is revenue, and the unrecovered cost is never below zero (Kani). Viewer: a Projects list and a project page with its figures, by month and by account. The sidebar measures its footer instead of reserving a fixed 172 px. P3 review: P2 can read the books until the owner consents
check / check (push) Canceled after 0s
A schedule-convention setting, the two new tax categories, a disposal before the in-service date and a depreciation catch-up each need their feature now (tax_categories_gain_exempt, disposal_before_service, depreciation_catch_up), so no write before consent leaves books P2 refuses or misreads; replayed names are read with P2's TIN detector (B-28). P1: the books keep how they are kept
Settings, conventions (posting templates, approval rules, policies, close steps, calendar, mappings, notes), decisions, open items and entry approvals are journal events (journal format 2). Books that keep their settings never read wanderbooks.toml or config.json; the server and the viewer take the vault key from --vault-key-file instead. books.import_settings moves a settings file in once, exactly as the server reads it. Approval rules, when enforced, gate every posting path. Replay refuses what it can't read as newer, never as corrupt. Lean: a record changes no figure. Mutation on the whole diff: every survivor killed by a test but two equivalent (docs/testing.md). The Company page says a late open item is overdue in words, not colour alone. Store: say "newer wanderbooks", not "corrupt", for books from a newer version
An unknown event type on a whole, chained line, or a journal.format_set
declaring a newer journal format, now raises StoreError::NewerJournal
(update wanderbooks) instead of JournalCorrupt. Corruption (bad hash,
seq, or JSON) is still corruption. The gate runs in the store, the
Snapshot and the GUI, after each line's parse, seq and hash checks, and
never skips a line it can't read. Adds the journal.format_set event
(format 1 today; nothing writes it yet) and a registry of every event
type this version reads, tested against the replay and projection arms.
Review fixes (P0 review, 2026-10-16):
- A line's own hash is checked only by the next line's prev, and the
gate used to refuse a line before reading the next: a flipped bit in a
middle line's type (or a format_set edited from 1 to 2) was reported
as "newer, the books are not damaged". Now the reader settles every
refusal against the next line (format::settle): a next line that
doesn't chain makes it corrupt; one that chains makes it newer and
verified; with no next line the message says "newer or damaged; update,
then run verify", never "not damaged" (NewerJournal.verified).
- A newer format number is judged newer before its features are parsed:
a newer format may shape them differently.
- Snapshot treats a blank complete line as corrupt, as the writer does.
- docs/spec/rules.md B-27, which the code cites, now exists.
Round-2 review fixes (2026-10-16):
- The envelope {seq, ts, type, payload, prev} and its hash (SHA-256 of
the canonical JSON) are frozen across formats (rules.md B-27); new
fields go in payload. settle reads only the next line's prev, leniently,
so a newer format's next line (a float, a string seq, keys of its own)
is never called corrupt: no readable prev means unverified newer.
- A key beside the envelope's was silently dropped (and the chain then
broke as "corrupt"): it is now NewerJournal, hashed over the raw
canonical JSON so the next line still checks it; JournalLine::parse
refuses such a line.
- "the books are not damaged" overclaimed: a verified refusal says line N
is intact and this version can't check the lines after it.
- The writer read the journal with BufRead::lines (invalid UTF-8 was an
I/O error); it now splits bytes on newlines as the Snapshot does, so a
non-UTF-8 line is JournalCorrupt in both.
- Store::open truncated a torn tail before the gate ran, altering newer
books (perhaps mid-append) before refusing them. The gate now runs over
the complete lines first; the tail is set aside (and journaled) only
when they pass.
- Mutation testing (docs/testing.md, P0): the viewer and the writer say
the same words about the same damaged line (the newline is no part of
it); read_journal_and_format returns every line and the format in
force; the journal page tells a format declaration.
Plan: plan/served.md P0 and 5.1.
Review round 3 (S6, S7). Store::open replays every complete line in
memory (the first line's currency, then the ledger) before a cut-off
last line is set aside, so a complete line the books can't apply
refuses the open with the journal byte for byte as it was and nothing
set aside (B-27 SCENARIO 3; test
a_bad_complete_line_before_a_torn_tail_leaves_the_journal_as_it_was);
catch_up now only projects. The viewer
applies the writer's first-line rule (created_currency, shared) instead
of guessing USD: any other first line, or a store.created without a
sound base_currency, is corrupt to both (test
the_first_line_is_store_created_for_the_viewer_and_the_writer). fuzz_store_replay varies the
first line (14,696 runs clean).

store: refusals leave the live books untouched; per-filing names; spec suite
The refusal property gained the converse law (an accepted command journals something; only batch runs may find nothing to do) and checks the store's class and payroll listings. It found a schedule registered with an out-of-range total whose first month was refused after its entry was begun: the live ledger kept a draft the journal never had. - Core: compound commands (post_schedule_month, reverse_entry, close_period_to, create_invoice, create_bill, receive_payment, pay_bill, run_payroll, remit_payroll_taxes) run inside Ledger::atomically, so a refusal partway leaves the ledger exactly as it was. - Core: a schedule total no line could carry, or finer than a cent, and an asset cost beyond the line range, are refused at registration. Replay keeps older schedules (replay_register_schedule). - Store: add_line, add_line_fx, mark_cleared, set_fx_rate, post_schedule_month and close_period_to changed the live ledger before journaling; they now run on a copy, journal what it produced, then swap it in, so a failed write leaves the live books as journaled. New spec-blind suite tests/spec_store.rs (57 tests written from the store's specs alone). Its two findings, adjudicated: - A file filed twice under different names listed the first name and type for both (the projection kept them per blob). Schema v8 gives each attachment its own; older databases backfill and heal by verify. - Withdrawn attachments stay in the store's listing, marked (the MCP listing hides them): the spec and doc said "omit" and are corrected. Also removes journal::truncate_to_last_good_seq: unused, and it dropped everything after the first bad complete line, which the books now treat as corruption for a person, never repaired automatically.
