swaitsandClaude Fable 5.1 bd6448532e feat(host): the lease and MCP channels as named pipes with the SID check, and the host, bridge and commands on Windows (P11c)
Windows steps 3 of D-62. Every `cfg(unix)` gate on the host, the bridge,
the opener, the books server and the command line is gone: they build on
every OS, and the Unix behaviour is unchanged (the existing over-the-wire
suites pass on Linux).

`ledger_mcp::ipc` is the one seam for the channels. Unix: the same 0600
sockets as before, peer uid unchanged (the peer functions moved here).
Windows: a named pipe `\\.\pipe\wanderbooks-<hash of the root's run/>-<name>`
made with a DACL of one allow entry for this account's SID, remote
clients refused, the first instance made once (a second server is
refused, as a held lock refuses it on Unix), and 16 idle instances kept
waiting so a client never finds all busy while the server makes the next.
Where Unix reads `SO_PEERCRED`, each end of a pipe takes the other's
process id (`GetNamedPipeClientProcessId`/`...ServerProcessId`) and
compares that process's token user with its own SID; any doubt is "not
us". Clients open with SECURITY_IDENTIFICATION so a pipe server cannot
act as the client. A blocking client with a read limit is polled with
PeekNamedPipe (a pipe read cannot be cut short), and a pipe that has
gone reads as the end of the stream, as a closed socket does. Stop
signals are Ctrl+C, Ctrl+Break, console close and shutdown where Unix has
SIGTERM, SIGINT and SIGHUP.

The host starts detached (DETACHED_PROCESS | CREATE_NEW_PROCESS_GROUP,
leaving the opener's job when the job lets it: an agent's job must not
take the host down, as an app's systemd scope must not on Linux) with a
fixed environment; `close_range` and `seccomp` stay Linux-only (D-32). A
replaced program is told by size and last write. Git for Windows is found
and a quiet git is stopped with its tree (`taskkill /T`). The test
harness of ledger-cli finds its root by `default_root`, cleans a child's
environment per OS and reaches the server over its pipe; the bridge's
scripted-server tests stay Unix-only.

No new dependency (tokio's named pipes and reqwest's `windows_named_pipe`
were already in the build); `windows-sys` stays in ledger-store.

Tests: ledger-mcp `ipc::tests` (four on every OS, one Windows only),
ledger-host `tests/windows_pipe.rs::a_second_user_cannot_open_the_pipe`,
Windows variants of the host and start tests.

swaitsandClaude Opus 5.5 7741e96eb3 refactor!: one way to serve books: the stdio server is gone (D-44)
check / check (push) Canceled after 0s
The owner (2026-10-23): "We should probably just delete the stdio path
altogether. THere's no point in that. And it sitting there unused will
just lead to bitrot. Nuke it?"

Books are served only by the books server (`wanderbooks server`),
reached by agents through the bridge (`wanderbooks mcp --book ID`),
which stays.

Removed: `wanderbooks dev-stdio`, the `ledger-mcp` binary, and
`ledger_mcp::run` (stdio and `--http` over a bare data dir), with all
that only that mode had:
- files the books make coming back inline: `HandedFile.content_base64`
  is gone, and `download` and `expires_at` are always there;
- books with no access log or backups: `books.access_log`,
  `books.backup` and `books.back_up_now` are always offered, by scope;
- the settings file read and reloaded (`legacy_files`), the vault key
  named by a file or `--vault-key-file`, and the books dir's
  key-inside-the-books and git checks (with `paths.rs`);
- `wire.rs` (the bridge frames an agent's lines itself);
- `books.settings`' file fields and `books.start`'s `settings_source`.

`BooksServer` is built one way, from `Served` (a book as the books
server serves it), in production and in the unit tests. An unknown tool
is now a protocol error (mcp-tools.md). Inline file input is unchanged.

Then the owner's three decisions (2026-10-23, the question tool):
(a) `books.import_settings` is removed entirely (118 tools): old books
come in whole by `wanderbooks books adopt`, which reads their settings
file once; ledger-config keeps its settings-file parsing only as far as
adoption uses it (`load` and the path-reading `effective_receipt_policy`
are gone), and `books.chart_template` gives its settings as
`books.set_setting` changes. (b) The viewer's loose-books-folder mode is
removed (`--data-dir`, `--books-toml`, `--vault-key-file`, the settings
file and config.json followed): it opens only books of the data root,
reading settings from the journal and the vault from the book's own
`vault/` and `keys/`. (c) `wanderbooks dev-stdio` has no stub: it is an
unknown command like any other word. Also: an upload's expiry past the
calendar is an error, never an empty string.

Tests: every suite that drove the stdio server moved to
crates/ledger-cli/tests/ and drives a real `wanderbooks server` on a
data root of its own (tests/common), handed files by their download;
mcp_stdio.rs is mcp_journeys.rs. Tests of what is gone are deleted and
listed in docs/testing.md. Docs: plan D-44 (D-18 superseded), STATUS,
testing, rules, mcp-interface, the handbook, README; justfile recipes.

swaitsandClaude Opus 5.5 d5c9522ad1 P2: tests mutation found, three bugs fixed; plan P12 and P13
Mutation testing pauses until P12 (D-33, owner 2026-10-20), which reruns
the whole max-testing pass over everything since P1. Before the pause,
pass 1 on slices 3-6 and its triage gave tests in ledger-store,
ledger-package and ledger-mcp, and three real bugs, fixed:
- the command line took an admin answer longer than four MiB, or cut off
  before its newline, whenever the bytes that came still parsed;
- The CPA package put a twin's number on the last dot of the whole path,
  so in a folder with a dot the second file landed in another folder;
- a document or category named of dots alone ("..") could climb out of
  its folder when the CPA package is unpacked.
The plan gains P13, bookspec (D-34): a formal, sourced accounting
specification first (rules with symbolic forms and worked examples), then
its own formal validation and a conformance harness any engine can be
tested against, seeded by P3's regression tests. docs/testing.md records
slices 3-8 and what P12 must cover; plan/STATUS.md says where P2 stands.

swaitsandClaude Opus 5.5 3cf359a0cd P2 slice 8: the viewer's menu, setup, no confinement (D-32)
No Landlock, no seccomp, no helper: isolation is "same_user
(advisory)". The lease socket keeps two intents (close, format-upgrade
consent). The viewer holds the books open while it runs and gains a
Books menu: New books, Back up now, Restore (preview, then confirm),
Close, Connect Claude Code / Codex. New commands `wanderbooks books
back-up` and `wanderbooks connect claude|codex`. The scaffold
(`new`/`init` and its templates) is gone; install.sh needs no sudo.

swaitsandClaude Opus 5.5 5bc0633cdd P2 slice 6: the viewer
`wanderbooks gui [BOOK]` finds the data root, reads settings from the
journal, the vault of the book, presence through ops/, Save a copy /
Open on every document, Save the W-9, the Export menu, and colour
schemes. One builder for the CPA package and the 1099 worksheet
(ledger-package), shared by the server and the viewer.

swaitsandClaude Opus 5.5 b26c099a68 P2 slice 5: files in and out
Files reach the books through the server: uploads by hash and size,
then filed; exports (the CPA package, the 1099 worksheet, W-9s) handed
over as downloads from the server, never read off disk by the agent.

swaitsandClaude Opus 5.5 a298d154b6 P2 slice 3: opening and closing the books (plan 3.9, D-21, D-23)
One wanderbooks executable. The books are open while the viewer, an
agent session or a terminal holds them: a host process takes leases on
a socket, starts the server (the hidden mode `wanderbooks server`) with
a pipe on its input, and closes it 10 s after the last lease ends. No
background service. One host even in a race (run/host.lock).

swaitsandClaude Opus 5.5 cab6e8a334 P2 slice 1: one executable (D-22)
The server and the viewer are libraries with run(prog, args), returning
Exit(code) instead of ending the process; ledger-mcp and ledger-gui are
one-line shims (the live books keep using them until the cutover).
wanderbooks dispatches dev-stdio and gui to them in-process; a mode must
come first and owns its flags. The gui feature (default) leaves the
viewer out of the server-only build, which just server-only builds,
clippies, tests, and checks for window libraries. The viewer's mutation
recipe is retired (owner, 2026-10-18); its two musts are tested
directly. Two review rounds; mutation on the diff (docs/testing.md).
