refuse hand entries (P4b S1, part A)
Plan P4b (D-45), slice S1, the engine half: rules.md B-38.
- ledger-core: every receivables or payables line carries its document
(Ledger.line_docs: DocRef, Movement, DocTag), written by the document
commands in the step that posts it, derived on replay from the existing
document events (the role's account as it stood then; payments by the
ordinal rule), copied onto a reversal's mirror. Ledger::stands_on;
doc_state / invoice_state / bill_state (total, paid, outstanding,
status Open/Partial/Paid/WrittenOff/Void, overdue days) as of any day;
ar_aging / ap_aging read them, so reversed payments and voids are right.
The control guard (add_line, add_line_fx, post_entry,
register_recurring) refuses untagged lines on receivables/payables,
exempting a reversal's mirror of a legacy line; replay never refuses.
Bounds (kernel::running_bounds, bounds_kept) on payments and reversals;
a document reversal never dated before its entry; deposit/payer accounts
must be cash-like and hold no role. New API: receive_payment_with /
pay_bill_with (PaymentDetails: instrument, reference), void_document /
check_void_document, control_check, payments_recorded,
standing_payments, replay_reverse_entry. Invoice.amount_paid/status
remain only as derived caches for the MCP layer until part B.
cashflow bill_splits reads payments from the tags.
- ledger-store: journal feature document_standing (D-39 gated) for a
payment accepted only because an earlier one was reversed;
receive_payment_with / pay_bill_with (instrument journaled as
entry.instrument_set, reference in the description), void_document;
replay uses replay_reverse_entry; schema 15 drops the projection's
amount_paid/status. Fixture p4-arap-before + golden figures written by
the version before S1, adjudicated in arap_standing.rs.
- ledger-gui: party card, cash "coming up" and company owed totals read
doc_state as of today (late from the derived state).
- Lean Documents.lean (control_agrees and friends); Kani
bounds_check_matches_definition,
bounds_kept_is_the_definition_on_books_in_bounds;
rules B-38, B-18/B-23 amended; bookspec `older = true` for legacy hand
lines; tests that hand-post to 1200/2000 post as replay or renumbered.
Review fixes (both reviews of part A):
- control_role_of guards only an account the role is assigned to or one
holding its documents' lines (a chart's own 1200 Equipment or card at
2000 is free until a document posts there); payment accounts check
other roles by holds_role (type-checked). The MCP tests that failed on
the guard (oracle_mcp, spec_projects) pass unchanged.
- standing_payments leaves out reversals (sorted, deduped); replayed
tags match the movement's side; payments_recorded counts every payment
event (tagged or not, Ledger.payment_events) and refuses overflow.
- The record caches settled (paid + discounted + written off) and owed
(Invoice/Bill.owed, never serialized): a void never reads as paid.
- assign_role: receivables/payables refuse moving onto an account with
untagged lines (RoleAccountHasHandLines) and, on their control account
holding a balance, say DocumentRoleHoldsBalance (no hand entry named);
B-23 reworded. The reversal-mirror exemption only takes a hand line
off (even chain depth); putting it back is refused.
- DocStatus Overpaid and Unattached; aging leaves out credit balances;
ControlCheck.attention lists out-of-bounds and unattached documents.
- stands_on counts a chain in order; indexes (doc_index, doc_accounts,
order_pos, reversed_by) keep the derived figures linear.
- Viewer reads a post-dated document as of its own date; one state per
row. bounds_kept's side-crossing documented as intended.
- Tests: ten new spec_documents scenarios, stronger proptests, store
proptest arap_props (live = replay = snapshot at every date, closed
months), fuzz ops void/payments with details, a GUI post-dated test;
Lean Step.assign / Step.release with unattached_zero kept; model
limits stated in docs/testing.md and B-38.
Review fixes (CPA and engineering lenses): only an assigned role's
account or one holding document lines is a control account (a chart's
own 1200 asset stays free); a role can't move onto untagged lines or off
document lines (Lean Step.assign); a void's cache never reads as paid;
no Decimal sum panics; per-document indexes keep figures linear; a
replayed tag matches its side; the feature gate counts payment events;
a payment's reversal is never listed as standing; an overpaid document
has its own status; the viewer keeps post-dated documents.

The P3 cutover review's open point 1: entries carry projects (classes,
B-37), but the QuickBooks Desktop file (B-34) left the CLASS field empty
on every line, and neither B-34 nor the README said so, though B-34 rule
6 says nothing changes silently.
Intuit's IIF Import Kit (vendored in docs/spec/sources/intuit-iif.md,
the kit's SHA-256 unchanged): the `!CLASS` header help says "Only the
NAME column is required" and a subclass's NAME is its parents' names
first, joined by colons; the kit's "Import First - List Declarations"
example declares `!CLASS` rows before any transaction, and its "2004
Deposit (Income)" example names the class line by line in CLASS. So the
file now declares every class in a `!CLASS` list after the accounts and
before `!TRNS`, and writes each line's class in CLASS (empty where the
line has none). Books with no class write no list, byte for byte as
before. A line whose class wasn't declared is refused
(IifError::UndeclaredClass), never written classless.
A class's NAME follows B-34's rules for an account's own name: plain
ASCII (rule 3), a colon written '-' (it would start a subclass),
trimmed, '?' if nothing is left, cut to 31 characters: Intuit's qbXML
Onscreen Reference gives `ClassAdd`'s Name "maxDT" : 31 (and 31 in the
Canadian, UK and Australian desktop editions; 100 only in Online), the
same as its `AccountAdd` Name (both JSON files vendored by SHA-256);
Conductor's QuickBooks Desktop API reference agrees and says the name is
case-insensitive. Classes whose NAMEs would match ignoring case get
" (id)", round after round, as accounts get " (code)", except that
among names that match, those already written differently from the
books (made safe, or tagged) yield first, a second " (id)" if need be:
a class's own name is kept unless another class's own name is the same
ignoring case (classes 1 "Café", 2 "Cafe", 3 "Cafe (1)" are written
"Cafe (1) (1)", "Cafe", "Cafe (1)"). Each class is tagged twice at most
and ids differ, so none is left alike (a hand-built list is refused). Each class name
written differently is an IifChange (IifField::ClassName), said one
line each in the warnings and in the package README, whose
"written differently" paragraph now names class names' limits; its IIF
line says CLASS is each line's project when there are classes. The MCP
and viewer notes count "account or class name(s)".
API: `iif_classes(ledger)` builds the list; `journal_to_iif` takes it
(`&[]` for none).
Docs: rules.md B-34 rule 8 with its sources; intuit-iif.md (the
`!CLASS` help, the list declarations and deposit examples, Intuit's SDK
department page, the qbXML Onscreen Reference's ClassAdd and AccountAdd
and Conductor's class reference, each with SHA-256);
mcp-interface.md (books.export iif, the package note); the bookspec
example iif-quickbooks-journal-file.toml (two projects: one carried and
renamed, one only declared; every line derived by hand); testing.md;
STATUS (open point 1 done; point 3 waits for the close, the owner said).
Tests: ledger-import
`iif_writes_each_lines_class_and_declares_the_classes_first`,
`iif_class_names_fit_quickbooks_and_every_change_is_listed`,
`iif_class_names_written_as_the_books_have_them_are_kept`,
`iif_refuses_an_undeclared_or_unfit_class`, property
`iif_class_names_never_clash`; ledger-package
`the_package_iif_carries_each_lines_project` and the bookspec example.
Broken to confirm: CLASS written empty fails the two exact-file tests,
the package test and the bookspec example; the " (id)" tag dropped fails
the names test and the property; tagging every name that meets (no
yielding) fails the kept-names test and the property (its shrunk case,
"A-B" beside "A\uFF1AB", kept in the regressions file).

Book value is cost less what the books posted; the schedule's figure is
apart. An asset's acquired date comes from its entry. Contributed
property keeps its section 723 carryover basis apart from its depreciable
basis (the lower of value and adjusted basis), with its 704(c) built-in
gain and method. The K-1 worksheet reports tax-basis capital (Form 1065
Item L) beside the book figures, leaving open what only the CPA knows.

books.rename_account; account names trimmed, bounded, refused when a
sibling's or TIN-shaped; books.show refuses what its target ignores. A
report asked for without dates covers this fiscal year so far, everywhere
(one rule for tools, descriptions and the viewer; the IIF and CPA package
keep their own dates). policy.require_tax_category warns or refuses; a
Form 4797 gain is shown apart on every return.

Direct method with the operating reconciliation and noncash schedules; it
foots by construction (Lean and Kani). Every non-cash account belongs to
one section; reversals net; a member or lender paying for the company is
cash borrowed and spent (D-42, constructive receipt and disbursement);
property a member contributes stays noncash. The bookspec seed: one loader
checks every example.

The CPA package's general-journal.iif now holds every posted entry through
as_of (closing entries left out, D-36), written as plain ASCII with CR LF,
DOCNUM the entry id, QuickBooks Desktop's field limits and subaccount types
honoured, and every character written differently listed in the export's
warnings and the README (grouped by substitution, TINs masked). The 1099
worksheet stops at as_of too. PDFs print CJK, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and
Devanagari (Noto fallbacks, OFL), and so does the viewer. has_full_tin reads
Unicode separators.

The first scheduled run (2026-10-19) failed four ways: the viewer's
mutation job called the recipe retired in P2 slice 1 (owner, 2026-10-18:
no mutation runs on the GUI); the core and MCP runs were stopped at
GitHub's six hours; the import run missed six mutants.
- Every mutation recipe takes a shard (k/n, default all of it); the
workflow runs the core in 8 shards, the store in 4, the importers in 2,
the MCP server in 16, each its own job with a 350-minute limit.
- Test timeouts are three times each run's own baseline, never under the
recipe's old fixed value, so slower runners don't report false
timeouts.
- The mutants-gui job is gone.
- ledger-import: rule_marks_match_their_notes,
asset_register_xlsx_headings_and_totals_rule and
xlsx_missing_amounts_are_cells_only_on_ruled_rows catch the six
(the tax-basis rule marks, a heading's alignment, the totals row's
blank cells, and a blank amount cell only on ruled rows), each checked
against its mutant by hand.

- core: TaxBasisRule (cost IRC 1012, carryover IRC 723, personal-use conversion Treas. Reg. 1.168(i)-4(b)), TaxBasis with the contributor's adjusted basis, Asset::tax_basis and ::built_in_gain (IRC 704(c)); the register gains tax rule, contributor basis, tax basis, built-in gain, total tax basis, missing count (rules.md B-25; sources vendored in docs/spec/sources/irs-partnership-basis.md)
- store: asset.tax_basis_set journaled, replayed, projected (schema v10)
- mcp: books.set_asset_tax_basis; register_asset takes tax_basis_rule and contributor_basis, checked before anything registers (found by the spec-blind suite); list_assets and the register export (json, csv) carry tax basis; instructions say to record it for every asset
- import: the register's XLSX and PDF gain the federal tax basis table with citations
- viewer: tax basis on the Assets page, the asset page (a Tax basis card), the report, the journal, and Needs attention for assets without one
- just: check and the mutation recipes sweep this user's test book dirs older than an hour (killed runs had left 23 GB in RAM-backed /tmp)
- docs: the parties, attachments, TIN vault, completeness engine, and updates designs (docs/parties-and-attachments.md)
- tests: spec-blind tax basis suites in core, store, MCP; register PDF/XLSX and viewer tests

- core: asset tags (generated PREFIX-0001 or the human's own; unique ignoring case; never reused by another asset) and serial numbers (rules.md B-24); a journaled link from an asset to the entry that acquired it (posted, unreversed, debiting the cost account); fixed_asset_register(as_of), reconciled to the GL (unposted depreciation, unregistered cost)
- store: asset.tagged, asset.serial_set, asset.acquisition_linked journaled, replayed, projected (schema v9); differs_from now also compares control roles and tag history
- config: [books] asset_tag_prefix, default the company's initials without legal-form words
- import: Avery 5160/8160 label sheets with QR codes (geometry vendored from Avery, docs/spec/sources/avery-5160.md); the register as XLSX and PDF
- mcp: register_asset tags (and links) automatically; books.label_asset, books.asset_labels; asset tools take a tag; books.show asset / assets page / register report; export fixed_asset_register (json, csv, xlsx, pdf) and in the CPA package
- viewer: Assets page (register, reconciliation), asset page (identity, schedule posted vs not, entries, documents), Fixed asset register report, global search by tag/serial/description, journal text, needs-attention items
- fix: verify compared snapshot amounts as strings; a zero total summed in hash-map order could print "0" or "0.00", so agreeing books failed verify at random. Now by value (regression test)
- tests: spec-blind suites for tags, register, prefix, store, MCP; label and register PDF/XLSX tests; viewer tests

report_to_xlsx gains INVARIANTS 4-6 (header block, right-aligned amount
headings, spacer and account spacing, footer one empty row down, rules
exactly where rule_above says, exact text grouped in threes), tested by
reading the workbook's styles, merges and column widths. The general
ledger's footer now sits one empty row down like the other sheets.

tests/spec_import.rs, written from the import crate's specs and sources
alone: every statement foots as printed on random books (P&L, balance
sheet with and without members, cash flow, trial balance, members'
equity), format_amount round-trips, bank CSV round-trips in both layouts
with date-order scenarios, IIF transactions sum to zero with every
account declared and ASCII fields, XLSX cells read back through a small
zip/DEFLATE reader, PDF labels with Typst markup render as text and the
bytes are deterministic, chart CSV and templates.
Its two findings, both fixed:
- "1/15/69" parsed as 2069: chrono's %y cuts over at 70, POSIX strptime
at 69 (69-99 are 1900s). Two-digit years are computed by POSIX now.
- An amount finer than a cent went into an XLSX as rounded text ("1.01"
for 1.005); it is written as its exact text now.

- Starter charts put "Platform and Payment Processing Fees" at 6100, the
code payroll posts wages to, so a template company that ran payroll
would book its wages as processing fees; their own payroll accounts
(7000, 7050, 2300) were never used. Now 6100 Salary & Wage Expense and
6110 Payroll Tax Expense (the engine's control accounts, with tax
categories), fees at 6060, and the unused accounts gone (the
withholding payables 2110-2150 are created when payroll first runs).
New tests: every template imports with categories valid for its
return; no template puts another account at a control code; a
partnership names every partner and its shares sum to 100%.
- format_amount printed a negative zero ("(0.00)" for -0.004); it rounds
half away from zero first now, like amount_parts.
- Specs (GOAL/SOURCE/INVARIANTS) for statement finishing, P&L, balance
sheet, cash flow, trial balance, members' equity (each must foot as
printed), format_amount, and the templates.
