ci(check): the update tests run alone first, with output (temporary)

The staged-update test fails on the runner on two runs in a row
(main a8ce2e7d, branch P11c), passes locally even on one slow core,
and the gate's step log keeps only its last lines. A step of its own
shows the message; it goes once the cause is fixed.
