while_closing_the_door_stays_open_refusing_as_requests_come raced the server: its only request before the close was a route for no books, which LINGER doesn't count, so when the server reached the linger before the first ping it found none in the last 500 ms and rightly shut at once (about 3 runs in 8 on a loaded machine). It now sends a books route just before the close, measures from the close, and holds the 3 s only when no request waited LINGER or near it.
